KUALA LUMPUR: Walk for charity while taking in the scenic views of the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park this May 13.
Sempoi Charity, a self-funded multiracial volunteer group, is organising a 2.5km fun walk at the renowned bird park to raise funds for the Jaringan Kampung Orang Asli Malaysia (JKOASM).
Organised in collaboration with the KL Bird Park, the run is also intended to create awareness on the importance of preserving nature, its diverse flora and fauna – especially birds – and to promote a healthy, active and fulfilling lifestyle for city dwellers.
Sempoi Charity president Mike Manicka said the KL Bird Park is an apt venue for the fun walk, as it houses a wide range of bird species native to Malaysia in a lush, natural setting, right in the heart of the city.
Mike said Sempoi Charity hopes to attract 2,000 participants and raise at least RM15,000 from the one-day event to support three of its initiatives this year.
“The funds will be channelled to JKOASM for their educational outreach programmes; he Sempoi Sahur soup kitchen to feed and provide toiletry kits for 500 homeless people; and to paint three graffiti murals at schools for disabled children via our SC Cares for Kids initiative.
“Some of JKOASM educational outreach programmes include women’s empowerment workshops, youth leadership workshops, and basic computer skills training to help the Orang Asli community obtain basic skills, knowledge and confidence to be self-sufficient,” he said at a press conference held recently at the KL Bird Park.
Mike said the fun walk will also serve as a ready platform for corporate companies to make contributions as part of their corporate social responsibility initiatives.
“Companies can help raise funds by taking up various sponsorship opportunities available, including sponsorship of participation of children from homes and orphanages,” he added.
Participants will each receive a t-shirt, goodie bag and a medal. The event also offers health screening, Zumba session and a visit to the bird park.
Chickaboo, the ostrich, which made a name for itself by running along the Federal Highway last year, will also be making a special appearance at the event.
Sempoi Charity Funwalk@KL Bird Park is divided into two categories: Adults – for individuals aged 18 and above; and Family – comprising an adult and one child.
The registration fee is RM80 and RM150 for the adult and family categories, respectively.
