Singapore’s beloved and friendly Bishan otter family decided that they would make themselves witnesses to a British couple’s marriage proposal – and the adorable scene has been immortalised in a photograph.

Tourists and otter fans Jordan Doyle and Mary Lister had come to Singapore for a spot of otter watching, and Doyle decided to pop the question on Tuesday (20 November) while the celebrated critters frolicked nearby.

According to the BBC, the couple had contacted local wildlife photographer Bernard Seah and asked him to show them where they could see Singapore’s famous otters in action.

Seah and a group of photographers therefore brought the duo to Marina Reservoir to see the Bishan otters (they moved there from their original home in the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park).

“I’d had the ring with me for a while and Mary is a huge fan of otters, so I thought to myself, right, this is the time to propose,” Doyle, 28, told the BBC.

The serendipitous photo opportunity almost did not happen. Seah told Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore that he had to persuade the couple to take a posed photo after Doyle first proposed to Lister privately without witnesses.

“He did a quiet proposal and when I found out, I said that they had to have a photo taken and that there would be opportunities for otters to be in the background or maybe foreground,” said the 49-year-old photographer.

The curious animals approached the pair when they were reenacting the proposal for a photo. Seah said it was a “priceless moment”.

Seah later posted a photo on Facebook of Doyle on one knee offering Lister a ring, as a group of otters gaze at their tender moment.

In case you’re wondering – Lister said yes to Doyle.

It’s a perfect shot for the wedding photo book, but not one that other otter-loving lovebirds can easily replicate!
