Daniel Kaluuya has opened up a bit more about the upcoming live-action Barney movie, admitting it is "really, really needed" at the moment.

The project was first announced last year and will see the beloved purple dinosaur hit the big screen, with the Black Panther star producing.

Speaking about why he wanted to make a Barney movie, the actor explained to Entertainment Weekly: "Barney taught us, 'I love you, you love me. Won't you say you love me too?' That's one of the first songs I remember, and what happens when that isn't true?

"I thought that was really heartbreaking. I have no idea why but it feels like that makes sense. It feels like there's something unexpected that can be poignant but optimistic. Especially at this time now, I think that's really, really needed."

Kaluuya, who is also well-known for his lead role in Get Out, said last year that he wanted to bring Barney out of "the shadows".

"Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood," he said. "We're excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of 'I love you, you love me' can stand the test of time."

Barney famously appeared in long-running children's TV show Barney & Friends, which aired between 1992 and 2009. Before that, he starred in direct-to-video series Barney and the Backyard Gang.
