Video: Brandon Banks’ 107-yard missed FG return swung Saturday’s game for Hamilton
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats narrowly pulled out a 27-24 victory against Montreal Saturday, and they were able to emerge victorious despite putting up substantially less offensive production on the day. A big part of that was thanks to recently-signed running back/returner Brandon Banks, who made perhaps the best play of the week. With Montreal up 23-20 late in the fourth quarter, Sean Whyte attempted a 42-yard field goal, but his effort fell short and Banks swooped it up. Here's what happened next:
That 107-yard missed field goal return turned into a 10-point swing, giving Hamilton a 27-23 lead that they'd never relinquish. It was a huge play from a guy who was only participating in his fourth CFL game. Banks told Ticats.ca afterwards he was happy to get over the hump and score his first Canadian touchdown:
“It was a learning process for me, I had to be patient,” said Banks, who was adjusting to the wider field and extra man in the Canadian game. “Of course I was frustrated because every time I touch the ball I want to score a touchdown. But I’m glad it happened now. We’ll be home for the playoffs.”
They will indeed, as that win helped the Ticats clinch second place in the East and a home playoff game against the Alouettes in the first round. Banks also fit in well on offence, adding a 45-yard touchdown run, another run for two yards and two catches for 19 yards. The first-year man out of Kansas State may be relatively new to the CFL, but if he keeps playing this way, he could be a crucial contributor for Hamilton in the postseason. If he pulls off returns like this down the line, he'll certainly be fun to watch.
