Naked man ‘birthed’ after being stuck in washing machine

Remember when your parents told you to never, ever climb into the washing machine — even though it looked like the greatest hiding spot ever?

That rule still applies in adulthood.

An Australian man recently learned that the hard way, when he got stuck in a washing machine as part of a poorly planned pranked.

Even more embarrassing: he was naked.

The 20-year-old Victoria man, identified in the media only as "Laurence," was about to take a shower on Saturday afternoon when he had the brilliant idea to climb into the top-loading machine to prank a friend.

Almost immediately, he got stuck.

"I've been in stranger places if that's possible," he said in a radio interview. "I've always been a practical joker. I thought 'I can easily fit in there', but the way I sat in there with my legs crossed, it was impossible to get back out."

When his friend was unable to free the 6-foot-tall prankster, police were called. They brought with them firefighters, paramedics and a search and rescue squad.

"He was very well wedged in there and we were concerned for his health and well-being," Shepparton police Sgt. Michelle De Araugo told the Shepparton News. "It was just a game gone wrong. It would be fair to say the gentleman was very embarrassed."

All attempts to free Laurence from the machine failed — until rescuers used the man's favourite olive oil as a lubricant. Twenty minutes later, Laurence slid out of the appliance.

"I was quite disappointed they used my good olive oil," Laurence told Fairfax Radio. "As soon as the washing machine went on its side, it was a bit like a birthing."

First Constable Luke Ingram offered some obvious advice to other pranksters:

"My advice would be for people not to climb into appliances," he told ABC News.

"Obviously, that causes a number of issues as we've seen on the weekend," he added.

A few days earlier, 11-year-old Trinity Rhodes from Utah also got stuck in a washing machine during a game of hide-and-seek. Her young friends attempted their own rescue operations, using butter, peanut butter and ice as unsuccessful lubricants before calling for help.

It took firefighters two hours to free the condiments-covered girl, who suffered only a few bruises and a banged-up ego.
