Princess Leia walks through NYC, endures street harassment from some very familiar faces

10 Hours of Princess Leia Walking in NYC

Princesses get harassed, too.

In the latest parody of the Hollaback “10 hours of walking in NYC as a woman” viral video, sci-fi royalty walks through the streets of New York, subject to the catcalls and harassment of some very familiar characters.

The video description reads:

“Ten hours of Princess Leia silently walking through all areas of Manhattan wearing a simple white dress with her hair in space buns.”

During her very long walk, she’s pestered by everyone from Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Yoda to Jawas, Storm Troopers and a “gross” isn’t-he-supposed-to-be-dead Darth Vader.

Even Indiana Jones made a quick, trilogy-inappropriate appearance in the video.

The original video intended to draw attention to the sexual harassment women regularly endure on the streets of New York City.

See the original below.

The viral catcalling video sparked a series of tributes, copycats and parodies.

Some of the videos tried to expose more harassment.

In one video, a woman replicated the New York experiment in Colombia.

In another, cameras captured the harassment experienced by a “tiny man” on the streets of Toronto.

One woman walked around NYC first in jeans, and then in a hijab. The drop in catcalls was remarkable.

And a New Zealand model replicated the NYC experiment in Aukland with very different results. Only two people spoke to her — and one of them was asking for directions.

In Mumbai, the results were similar. Despite wearing a tank top and short skirt, the woman in the video experienced no instances of street harassment.

Of course, there were also a handful of parodies, apparently missing the more serious point of the original video.

Here’s 10 hours of walking in Austin as a hipster.

Here’s 10 hours of walking through Warsaw as a handsome man. (Spoiler alert: Apparently Warsaw has a population of one.)

And the weirdest one we’ve seen yet: 10 hours of walking as a horse.

“It’s not easy being a horse.”

What do you think: are these parodies missing the point? Or is every viral video, no matter how well-intentioned, fair game?
