Small car COEs rise while big cars’ fall

Certificate of Entitlement (COE) premiums for small cars and commercial goods vehicles rose Wednesday from the previous bidding two weeks ago, but fell for big cars and those in the open category.

The premium for commercial goods vehicles rose 7 per cent to reach S$65,036 – its highest level this year.

Premiums for buying cars below 1,600cc inched up 1.2 per cent from the previous S$73,100 to the current S$73,989.

This increase in premium for small cars comes despite an announcement from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) that there will be a 14 per cent increase in car COEs between August 2013 to January 2014 from the February to July period this year.

The COE prices for cars above 1,600cc fell 0.9 per cent to S$76,389 while that of the open category – usually for the purchase of big cars – fell 0.3 per cent to S$76,802.

The premium for motorcycles returned to S$1,712 despite a drop two weeks ago.
