A visit to the majestic Mayon Volcano

By FlipNomad for Yahoo! Travel

Mayon Volcano has been one of the main tourist attractions in Albay. The gorgeous, almost perfect cone shape of this majestic mountain has never failed to mesmerize local and foreign tourists alike. It is even compared with the beauty of Mt. Fuji in Japan.

Mt. Mayon is said to be the most active volcano in the country and has erupted a number of times in recent years. One of the most devastating eruptions happened in 1814 when it buried a town named Cagsawa. The church ruins of this town with the volcano as its background, became one of the most iconic image of Albay.

We passed by Mt. Mayon on our way to Donsol to swim with the whale sharks and as soon as the mountain appeared on our horizon, we were captivated with its jaw-dropping beauty. No picture can ever capture how beautiful Mt. Mayon is.

Seeing this volcano and the ruins are not the only things you can do. Here are five things that I highly recommend you try when you visit Legazpi.

Zip Line in Lignon Hills

Ziplining has become a very popular activity in the Philippines and they've set up quite a few zipline facilities all over the country. But nothing compares to the zipline in Lignon because of the opportunity to see an amazing view of Mayon.

ATV ride

There are companies in Lignon Hills that arranges ATV adventure tours in the lava front of Mayon Volcano. Alternatively, they also arranges paintball games in other parts of the town.

Albay Park and Wildlife

if you are travelling with your family, a visit to this park would be a nice treat to your kids. Get a chance to see a variety of Philippines local species. The park also offers some facilities like bicycle and boat rental.

Visit Embarcadero

Embarcadero is Legazpi's main shopping and dining complex. Check it out if you are looking for some souvenirs. Dining in Embarcadero is also a nice experience due to numerous options and the harbour front view that it offers.

Chilli ice cream

Indulge yourself with Bicol's fiery specialties such as Bicol Express and don't miss out novelty ice creams in Colonial Grill such as their chilli ice cream.

How to get here
Legazpi is served by various local airlines flying from Manila. Alternatively, you could also take a 10-hour bus ride from Manila to Legazpi.
