The recent security lapse at Bishan Depot where a train was found vandalised on Wednesday morning was likely caused by human failure, said SMRT.

In a statement released on Thursday, the transport operator expressed regret over the incident and said security measures have been tightened.

It also said it will intensify patrols at all depots, increase spot checks and ensure that all security personnel are properly performing their duties.

"We share the public's concern over the security and safety of our trains," said Mr Goh Chee Kong, SMRT Corporation's senior vice-president for communications and services.

"We will intensify supervision to ensure that the patrols are conducted diligently, and expedite the installation of the FIDS (Fence Intrusion Detection System)."

Last October, SMRT initiated and agreed with the Public Transport Security Committee (PTSC) on an FIDS for all train depots, following a break-in last May which resulted in one side of a train being spray-painted with graffiti.

To reduce reliance on manned patrols and to have 24/7 automated monitoring, the system would be complemented by BRC welded fencing, additional CCTVs and lighting along the perimeter fencing, SMRT said.

SMRT also said it had completed immediate security measures to better secure their depots by this August, including installation of concertina wires on all perimeters of train depots and welded grills to cover all drains and other gaps; the erection of additional guard posts; and the intensification of all lighting. Patrols were also immediately doubled in frequency.

SMRT added that it will continue to work closely with the police to apprehend the culprit(s).
