The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) has yet to endorse any presidential candidate for the upcoming Presidential Election.

And it may end up not endorsing any candidates in the end, said President of NTUC John De Payva.

Previously, NTUC has supported former President Ong Teng Cheong and President SR Nathan. Both men were involved in the labour movement and served in the NTUC.

De Payva was speaking at a closed door dialogue with Presidential hopeful Dr Tony Tan on Tuesday and said NTUC's central committee will assess each candidate's qualities and background before endorsing the candidate.

De Payva told local media that while he personally believes Dr Tony Tan fits the bill, he added "We are mindful of who we think should be President, but we have not decided whether to endorse or not to endorse."

On Dr Tan's end, the former deputy chairman of Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) and ex-chairman of Singapore Press Holdings said he welcomes endorsements and would be happy to receive endorsements from organisations.

Dr Tan, 71, is among five potential candidates vying to contest the upcoming Presidential Election, which has to be held by the end of the month.
