President SR Nathan has dissolved Parliament on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, paving the way for the General Election (GE).

This comes six weeks after the release of the Electoral Boundaries report. The dissolution of Parliament means the GE must take place within three months.

This is followed by the President issuing a writ of Election to the Returning Officer, who then issues the Notice of Election.

After the writ is issued, Nomination Day must take place between five days and a month.

However, the minimum period between Nomination Day and Polling Day has been extended from nine to 10 days to compensate for the extra Cooling-Off Day, which was introduced last April to allow voters time to reflect on issues during the election before going to the polls.

With the Electoral Boundaries report revealing 12 single member constituencies, two four-member GRCs, 11 five-member GRCs and two six-member GRCs, 87 seats in Parliament will be contested.
