#26 Trek to the Hill Forts of Rajasthan

The six hill forts are Rajput-style military structures that maximised the landscape and surrounding terrain; they were built to wall off complete villages from invaders’ attacks back in the day.

Now they stand as a testament to India’s ancient warring dynasties from as far back as the 5th century – and are rightfully listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Travellers who intend to trek the hill forts should know that they’re spread over a few states and cover some 800 km. So some planning and a certain amount of physical fitness is required – or you can choose to visit just one.

Hire a reputable driver to take you safely through the interior of Rajasthan, then stop at each of the forts for a day’s worth of exploring.

Otherwise, try Palace On Wheels for a spot of luxury. One fort not to be missed, Chittorgarh, is on Day 3 of their itinerary.
