Try whitewater rafting in Magdalena, Laguna

Text and photos by Ed Brian Sacamos

When someone says "River Whitewater Rafting", Cagayan De Oro and Davao City come to mind. But these places are located thousands of kilometers away from Manila.

For those who don’t want to travel to Mindanao to get the thrill one can only get from whitewater rafting, there’s an alternative destination closer to the metro.

The quaint town of Magdalena, Laguna offers 5 to 7 kilometers of river for whitewater rafting. The best part is that the place can be reached within 2-3 hours from Metro Manila.

The spot is perfect for residents of the urban jungle who are looking for an adrenaline rush, but who don’t want to spend too much or who don’t have long vacations.

Magdalena is known as “Little Hollywood” because was a favorite shooting location of classic local movies. Now, it’s a town of rice fields and coconut plantations.

Well-known spots in Magdalena, Laguna include:
-Mary Magdalene Parish Church
-Mali-mali Bridge
-Emilio Jacinto Shrine
-Bahay Laguna
-The Pintong Kabag
-The Pintong Pilak.

Aside from whitewater rafting, visitors to Magdalena should also try river tubing and cliff diving. For the best whitewater rafting experience, visit on wet months (June to December).

HOW TO GET THERE
If on a private vehicle, take the National Highway from Sta. Cruz and turn right to San Luis Road/Pagsanjan-Magdalena Road (Sambat)

Using public transport, ride a bus from Cubao or Buendia-Taft going to Sta. Cruz. Alight at Sta. Cruz and then take the jeepney to Liliw/Majayjay. Alight at Magdalena.
