Forgotten reservoir uncovered in Telok Blangah

An abandoned reservoir that survived two World Wars has been hiding in the jungle near Mount Faber all this time.

The “forgotten reservoir” has been around since the colonial era and was used as a water source Tanjong Pagar dockyard in the 1900s, said the National Heritage Board (NHB). It was later converted into a swimming pool in 1938, then a reservoir in the 1940s.

Two researchers used Google Glass to record their visit to the site and gave the public a virtual tour of the reservoir.

The 7-minute video was posted on Tuesday on the Heritage TV’s YouTube channel.

The reservoir made headlines back in the day when two soldiers and a youth were found drowned in its waters in 1936 and 1948 respectively.

In the video, the researchers spot a few interesting features such as the remains of a diving board, a filtration system, and a sign that says “Danger: No Swimming No Fishing”.

Today, Singapore has a total of 17 reservoirs across the island.
