Vacant ECs in Singapore hit its highest level

The proportion of vacant Executive Condominiums (ECs) in Singapore climbed to 16.2 percent in Q3 2014, or its highest level in over five years, reported the media.

Experts attribute the spike in empty units to the influx of new units as well as the cooling demand for resale HDB flats.

Japan economy enters recession after surprise Q3 contraction

Asian markets mostly fall on Monday, with Tokyo tumbling almost three percent after data showing Japan's economy slipping into recession

Japan's economy sank into recession in the third quarter, making it almost inevitable that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will delay a fresh sales tax hike and call snap elections to reinvigorate his power against party rivals, analysts said Monday.

Abe's two-year premiership has been largely focused on breathing life into Japan's deflation-plagued economy, and getting a handle on its soaring national debt by tapping into new revenue through raising duties.

Australia and China are set to sign a free trade deal hailed by Canberra as a "game changer" that will open up billions of dollars in new export markets and counter a painful downturn in the mining sector.

The pact, to be signed during a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping, would be worth up to US$18 billion to the Australian economy over the next decade, senior government MP Josh Frydenberg said.

The Islamic State group has beheaded Peter Kassig, releasing a video Sunday showing a masked militant standing over the severed head of a man it said was the former U.S. Army Ranger-turned-aid worker, who was seized while delivering relief supplies in Syria last year.

President Barack Obama confirmed Kassig's slaying after a U.S. review of the video, which also showed the mass beheadings of a dozen Syrian soldiers.
