India top court recognises transgenders as 'third gender'

India's highest court on Tuesday moved to recognise a third gender, also ruling that transgenders should be granted access to social welfare schemes offered to other minority groups.

The case was filed in 2012 by a group of petitioners seeking equal rights under the law for transgenders in India. India's decision follows quickly the one made by Australia's top court to recognise a third "neutral" gender.

Singapore's stock market rose to a seven-month high on news of a S$3.07 billion share buyout deal by local property developer CapitaMalls Asia.

Undersea drone hunt for Malaysian plane may take two months

A US Navy underwater drone sent to search for the missing flight MH370 at the bottom of the Indian Ocean could take up to two months to scour the demarcated search area, which spans some 600 sq.km.

Search authorities said on Tuesday that its introduction marks a new slower-paced phase in the search for the plane, which disappeared more than a month ago, and follows the premature resurfacing of an Australian Bluefin-21 autonomous underwater vehicle, which had to return after it exceeded its 4.5km depth limit.
