Little India riot COI: Video evidence at public hearing show dead worker not 'manhandled'

A public hearing into what happened during the riot in Little India began at the Subordinate Courts on Wednesday morning.

The Committee of Inquiry (COI) set up to investigate the incident has heard and seen a video evidence of the incident.

The evidence showed that the Indian man, Sakthivelu Kumaravelu, 33, whose death sparked off the riot, was not "manhandled or thrust off" a bus he was on as theorised by some foreign media, said senior state counsel David Khoo in his opening statement.

Protesters braced Wednesday for a fresh assault by riot police in central Kiev after a day of clashes left at least 25 people dead in the worst violence since the start of Ukraine's three-month political crisis.

Protesters hurled paving stones and Molotov cocktails at lines of riot police that had pushed into the heart of the devastated protest camp.

Overnight, security forces rained a volley of tear gas down on thousands of demonstrators as they ramped up attempts to clear the camp at Independence Square, where protesters have set up a sprawling tent city during three months of protests.
