"Painting of the year is a freaking solar panel...," said Facebook user Jeff Chen.

"Did someone remove the painting? All I see is what looks like my school blackboard...," says a Lucy Fernandez.

After United Overseas Bank announced their Painting of the Year (Singapore) winner on Thursday, many online citizens seemed baffled by the piece.

According to Channel NewsAsia, Singapore-based Korean artist Om Mee Ai was behind the artwork, which is made using oil on canvas, consisting of "57 layers of colour" although it appears like a big black square.

The winner walked away with S$32,000. Other artists Antonius Subiyanto from Indonesia and Singaporean 17-year-old Lee Jia Zhen also won awards for Southeast Asian Painting of the Year and emerging artist category, respectively.

Subiyanto walked away with S$45,500.

However, all eyes were on the Singapore grand winner's piece as many netizens did not appear satisfied with the work.

Twitter use @Woddee_devART said, "Once again. UOB Painting of the Year Awards have garnered some unpleasant views. Lately, the art scene's taste in art is quite concerning."
