A satirical Singapore-based Tumblr blog is going viral online.

Called the “Gay Lifestyle Singapore – Promoting a Gay Lifestyle for Str8 people who want the same”, it parodies the “gay lifestyle” that homosexuals and lesbians are supposed to lead in a newsletter format. Following the Tumblr blog, it said, meant that, “You will never feel left out again because you don’t know how to live a gay life.”

Its first entry, posted on Monday, labeled itself a “useful periodical” for those who would like to adopt a gay lifestyle. “There is no gayer fruit than a durian, so if you want to adopt a Gay Lifestyle, have some today,” it said.

Its second post, published on Wednesday, saw as its main headline, “Crowded places are gay.”

The blog is making several rounds on Facebook and Twitter and being shared by pages such as New Nation and Gay SG Confessions.

A tweet by @eisen said, “Do you want to adopt a #gaylifestyle? Visit gaylifestylesg.tumblr.com to learn how to dress gay, eat gay & speak gay!”

Debate over the term “#gaylifestyle” was sparked after it was used in the recent Our Singapore Conversations survey, which said that Singaporeans in general, mainly the older and less educated, do not accept “gay lifestyles”.

Online gay community site, Fridae, said wrongful use of the term implies that being homosexual is a choice rather than an “innate” option.

“The phrase ‘gay lifestyle’ is used to denigrate lesbians and gay men, suggesting that their orientation is a choice and therefore can and should be cured,” the article quoted a US-based gay media watchdog GLAAD.

Yahoo! blogger Shah Salimat also criticised the use of the term as it implies there is a common “gay lifestyle” and that it serves to institute an "us against them" mentality.
