Workers’ Party releases ‘What makes us Singaporean?’ National Day video

Whether it’s bonding over a meal or catching a football match with “kakis” over coffee or reporting for reservist duty, these are some of the snapshots of Singapore life that bind us together as one people.

These are among the uniquely Singaporean activities highlighted in two-minute National Day tribute video released by the  Workers’ Party.

The heartfelt and “poignant" clip, as mentioned by one YouTube commenter, pieces together the typical ups and downs of Singaporean life from the perspective of, among others, a working mother, a globe-trotting photographer and a man going for reservist training.

“Every year also kena called for reservist, but okay lah, at least I’m not the only one (sic),” said the army uniform-clad gentleman in Singlish. Uploaded by Singapore’s main opposition political party on Tuesday, it has since garnered over 9,000 views.

“It’s hard work being a mom, and making a career for myself. But I know that we can depend on each other,” said the working mum.

“As we search for our place in the world, the Singapore identity continues to evolve and take root,” said the narrator of the video, whose voice sounds just like the party’s chairperson, Sylvia Lim. The video ended with a call for Singaporeans to find our “unique value” and “binding quality” as Singapore approaches 9 August — National Day — this Saturday.
