Blue Bloods just went a little bit country, and people had a lot to say about it.

Singer and songwriter Lyle Lovett surprised everyone when he appeared in the latest episode of the CBS drama as Texas Ranger Waylon Gates.

The cowboy hat-wearing crime fighter was forced to team up with Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and Maria Baez (Marissa Ramirez) after the "Lone Star Killer" escaped in New York City. From the moment a dangerous shoot-out with the criminal brought Waylon and Danny together, it was clear they weren't going to get along.

And Danny wasn't the only one who clashed with the newcomer from Texas. Some viewers at home were very confused by Lyle's appearance on the show, suggesting that other actors may have been better suited for the role.

In the end, however, Danny and Waylon made a good team. The detective and ranger finally managed to catch the escaped felon—and realized that they couldn't have done it without one another.

This led to a sweet moment where Waylon told Danny he would make a good Texas Ranger and gave him his cowboy hat.

Plenty of fans loved the way their relationship turned out, and are even calling for Lyle to guest star in more episodes.

Whether or not the country star will return to the crime show remains to be seen.

In the meantime, we'll be staring at more photos of Donnie in a cowboy hat. 😍
