Boris Johnson ‘to travel to Scotland’ for two-week family staycation
Boris Johnson is reportedly travelling to Scotland for a two-week ‘staycation’ next weekend.
The prime minister will head north for a holiday with his fiancée Carrie Symonds and their son Wilfred, according to The Sunday Times.
A Downing Street source declined to comment but did not deny the report, the Press Association reported.
The prime minister has previously spoken about allowing a “brief staycation to creep into the agenda, if possible” when asked about his own plans.
Last month, the prime minister encouraged people to consider “wonderful staycations here in the UK”.
Mr Johnson said: “There are all sorts of fantastic destinations, the best in the world, I would say.
“All my happiest holiday memories are of holiday vacations here in the UK, bucket-and-spade jobs or whatever, and I thoroughly, thoroughly recommend it, and I’m sure that people will have a great time over the summer.”
A spokesperson for No 10 has been contacted for comment.
The report of a domestic holiday follows a number of MPs being caught out after quarantine restrictions were imposed on returning residents while they were abroad.
Grant Shapps, the transport secretary, was holidaying in Spain when the country was put on the UK’s ‘red’ list of destinations, mandating two weeks of isolation on return to the UK.
The same happened to Paul Scully, the minister for London, when he was in Lanzarote.
The House of Commons has been in recess from 22 July, and will return on 1 September.
Tourism businesses and hotels have been open in Scotland since 15 July, while England‘s hotels, caravan and camping sites and B&Bs welcomed guests from 4 July.
