ALOR STAR: Police have picked up a 19-year-old youth yesterday to assist investigations into a baby dumping case at a college hostel in Bukit Kayu Hitam recently.

The youth, said to be the boyfriend of a student who dumped her newborn baby in the toilet, will be taken for remand at the Jitra magistrate's court today.

State Criminal Investigations Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Datuk Mohd Nashir Ya confirmed that the suspect was arrested somewhere in Jitra yesterday.

It was reported that the body of the baby was found in the toilet bowl of the students' hostel on Thursday.

The gruesome discovery had led police to the arrest a first year college student, in her early 20s, who sought post-labour treatment at a government hospital here.

Police initially classified the case under Section 318 of Penal Code for concealment of birth by secret disposal of a dead body but reclassified the case as murder after a post-morterm report revealed that the baby was born alive before he was dumped in the toilet bowl.

Yesterday, police obtained a week-long remand against the student, who hails from Sungai Petani.
