Cornell was honored with a tribute concert called “I Am the Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell” in Los Angeles in January, which featured performances by his Soundgarden and Audioslave bandmates, as well as his contemporaries from Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters and others including Miley Cyrus, Metallica, Fiona Apple, Brandi Carlile and Chris Stapleton. Pitt was also in attendance at the concert.

Cornell was born in Seattle and founded Soundgarden in 1984, the band that was known as one of the preeminent grunge rock acts in the early 1990s. After the band broke up in 1997, Cornell formed Audioslave with the former members of Rage Against the Machine, and he also performed solo. Cornell was part of the grunge supergroup Temple of the Dog, which featured members of Pearl Jam.
