Brazilian Dota 2 pro 444 dies due to COVID-19

Brazilian Dota 2 pro player Anderson “444” Santos, also known as ‘Bob’, has died due to COVID-19, his former team paIN Gaming shared on Saturday (6 February).

“Today we lost Bob to COVID-19. We will be forever grateful that you helped us build another chapter of our history on Dota. You are an incredible person and the longing that remains is immeasurable,” said paIN Gaming in a post on their official Twitter account.

“We can't believe they took you away from us so early. Lucky are those who had the chance to live with you and have the honour of watching you play. Our hearts and thoughts are with your family. Rest in peace, 444.”

444 started his professional career in 2017 as the position 4 support player for Brazilian team T Show. He joined paIN Gaming’s most recent Dota 2 squad in March 2019 and remained with the roster until its disbandment in April last year.

As a member of paIN Gaming, 444 was able to win the Brazil Finals of the 2019 World Electronic Sports Games and qualify for DreamLeague Season 13: The Leipzig Major.

444’s last professional appearance was with the Brazilian stack ‘One Million’ during the open qualifiers of the Dota Pro Circuit’s (DPC) South American regional league in early January.

Many among the Dota 2 community in South America and the rest of the world expressed their grief over the passing of 444, including some of his former teammates.

Quincy Crew support player and 444’s former teammate in paIN Gaming, Rodrigo “Lelis” Santos, said he was “an extremely humble and charismatic person.”

“Today unfortunately I woke up to very sad news. COVID-19 took another soul and this time it was from our beloved player 444. He was an extremely humble and charismatic person. Rest in peace, Bob,” said Lelis in a post on his personal Twitter account.

Kaue "Dunha1" Camuci, another of 444’s former teammates in paIN Gaming, also took to Twitter to express his grief over 444’s passing.

“I cannot put into words the loss that you will make me feel my brother! You were an angel in my life and I will thank you every day of my existence, there is a hole in my chest that I cannot convey into words. I will love you forever Bob!” said Dunha1.

Teams and organisations outside of Brazil have also expressed their grief over 444’s passing, including Team Secret and OGA Dota PIT, the organisers of the DPC’s South American regional league.

Brazil has had more than 9 million coronavirus cases since the pandemic started, with over 230,000 deaths. In January, three members of Brazilian team DreamMax tested positive for COVID-19 when the team flew to Singapore for the Mobile Legends M2 World Championship.

An expert committee monitoring the side effects of vaccines in Hong Kong will assess a detailed autopsy report before deciding if his death was linked to the vaccine. The panel earlier concluded there were no direct links between the vaccines and the deaths of two people with chronic illnesses. Nip reiterated that the government took every incident involving recipients of the vaccine very seriously, adding the expert committee would assess each case to ascertain any causation links between the vaccine and their condition. On Monday, 9,900 people received China’s Sinovac vaccine. A total of 103,800 people have been inoculated with either the Sinovac or BioNTech vaccines since the drive launched in late February. Initially, those aged 60 or above were prioritised to get immunised in the city’s vaccination programme. Health care workers, residents and staff of care homes, public service workers and cross-boundary transport workers were also among the first to be offered the vaccine. Asked why Hong Kong started vaccinating people aged above 60 when mainland China had not yet recommended the use of the Sinovac vaccine for that age group, Nip said the city’s advisory panel on Covid-19 vaccines had, after careful assessment, determined the benefits of getting the elderly population inoculated outweighed the risks. “In the past, especially during the third wave of case surges [in July], infections and deaths among the elderly age groups were high,” Nip said. The government on Monday announced it was expanding the vaccination campaign to include seven more eligible groups, covering a further 1.3 million people and taking the total number eligible in the city to be vaccinated to about 3.7 million. Starting on Tuesday morning, people in the new categories can book slots online to receive either the Sinovac or BioNTech vaccines.
