Enola Holmes is taking Netflix by storm as fans catch Millie Bobby Brown starring in the title role, who also happens to be Sherlock Holmes' younger sister. As with any other mystery, so much happens in the film and everything comes together in an explosive finale that no one saw coming. So what exactly happened at the end of Enola Holmes? And does it set the movie up for a possible sequel?

Here is the ultimate breakdown of the Enola Holmes ending.

*Major spoilers for Enola Holmes below!*

What happened at the end of Enola Holmes?

Enola and Lord Tewkesbury end up escaping from the finishing school that Mycroft sent Enola to. While using the driving Miss Harrison's motor car, Enola realizes that the person who is really going after Tewkesbury is his uncle, who hopes to take over the estate and vote against the Reform Bill. Instead of going back to London, Enola and Tewkesbury head over to his estate to confront him once and for all.

However, as soon as they reach the house, they notice that it is completely deserted and find Linthorn there. He tries to kill Tewksbury to finish the job that he was hired for, but Enola and Tewkesbury are able to fight back and take him down. At that moment, The Dowager, Tewkesbury's grandmother, reveals that she is actually the one who hired Linthorn since she wants someone who would vote against the reform bill. With a gun in hand, she shoots Tewkesbury and Enola ends up mourning him. Tewkesbury shows signs that he's actually alive and had a piece of armor under his clothes that stopped the bullet. Now knowing the truth and no way for her to escape them, she is arrested for trying to kill Twekesbury.

In a small flashforward, Sherlock visits Lestrade and says that he's solved the Tewkesbury case. After Sherlock reveals how he was able to deduce that the grandmother was behind it, Lestrade tells him that Enola solved it first. At the House of Lords, Tewkesbury is getting ready for his first meeting and tells Enola that his mother has extended an invitation to have Enola come live with them. She does not accept and says that it's time for her to be independent, but that it won't be the last time he sees her.

Looking at the newspaper for the day, Enola discovers that her mother responded to her cypher and has sent her a time and place to meet up. After solving it, she realizes that Sherlock was the one who put it in the paper and it's actually a trap. At the time and place where they're supposed to meet up, Mycroft says that Enola beat him again and that she would not be there because she knows the truth. However, Sherlock notes that she would still be curious enough to at least see that it's them, just in case that it isn't. As they leave, Sherlock notices Dash by the statue and decides to leave it there, instead of trying to look for her.

As Enola returns home, she discovers that her mother is in her room. She reveals that she left because she wanted to change the world for Enola and says that she's proud of her for everything that she's done on her own. They embrace before she leaves again. Enola goes outside and says that she's ready to solve more cases and that she's ready to create her own future for the first time.

What does the ending mean for Enola Holmes 2?

The film's ending certainly hints at a possible sequel, which Millie and Louis both have said they would love to come back to do. While it didn't set up a brand new mystery, the movie is based on a book series that has five different books, so there's plenty of possibilities. The next book, The Case of the Left-Handed Lady, would follow Enola as she tries to find a woman who has mysterious disappeared. According to the book's description:

"Enola Holmes is being hunted by the world's most famous detective — her own brother, Sherlock Holmes. But while she is on the run in the world's biggest, darkest, dirtiest city, she discovers a hidden cache of charcoal drawings and feels as if she is a soul mate to the girl who drew them. But that girl, Lady Cecily, has disappeared without a trace. Braving the midnight streets, Enola must unravel the clues to find this left-handed lady, but in order to save her, Enola risks revealing more than she should. Will she be able to keep her identity a secret and find Lady Cecily, or will the one thing she is trying to save — her freedom — be lost forever?"
