Boris Johnson will decide whether to carry on or walk away from Brexit trade talks with the EU this Friday, No 10 has said. It comes as the PM prepares to discuss the state of the negotiations with European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen later on Wednesday.

Downing Street is said to be encouraged by Angela Merkel’s latest remarks. The German chancellor suggested the EU would have to be more “realistic” in compromising on fishing rights, saying a deal had to be “in British interests as well as the interests of the 27-member EU”.

It comes as Sir Keir Starmer accused the PM of “abandoning the science” at PMQs, reiterating his call for a short “circuit breaker” lockdown in England. Elsewhere, a new poll shows 58 per cent of Scots now support independence – a record high.
