The man police suspect of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was class valedictorian at a prestigious Maryland prep school and graduated with honors from an Ivy League school.

Luigi Mangione, 26, graduated from the private Gilman School in Baltimore in 2016 as the class valedictorian, PEOPLE confirms. The all-boys school lists tuition charges for high school as $37,690 annually.

He went on to study engineering and computer and information science at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with both a bachelor's and master's degree cum laude in 2020, according to his LinkedIn page.

Police believe Mangione is the gunman responsible for killing Thompson in Midtown Manhattan on Dec. 4. He was spotted by an employee at an Altoona, Pa., McDonalds and allegedly discovered carrying a 9mm "ghost" gun and suppressor, which resembled the weapon used to kill Thompson. Police in Altoona arrested him on weapons charges.
