Broadway musical ‘Hamilton' crowned 2016 Pulitzer Prize winner

A big screen version of smash hit musical "Hamilton" is coming to movie theaters in 2021, its creator announced on Monday

Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway musical "Hamilton" has won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Drama, joining the ranks of just eight other musicals that have won the prestigious award in over a century (via Billboard).

The production, which received near-unanimous critical acclaim following its premiere at the Public Theater in February last year, is inspired by Ron Chernow's biography Alexander Hamilton and explores the topics of the Founding Fathers and American independence.

The Pulitzer Prize in Drama award aims to recognize excellence in "a distinguished play by an American author, preferably original in its source and dealing with American life", and also includes a $10,000 cash prize.
