MANILA, Philippines - The Manila Bulletin has received the award for English Newspaper of the Year from the Gawad Tanglaw, an organization made up of respected academicians.
Bulletin President and Publisher, Atty. Hermogenes P. Pobre, received the medal and citation during ceremonies at the St. Dominic College of Asia in Bacoor, Cavite, last Thursday.
Balita, the Manila Bulletin's Filipino tabloid, won the award for Filipino Newspaper of the Year. Balita has won the award for four straight years.
The Manila Bulletin's vernacular magazines Bannawag, Hiligaynon and Bisaya were recipients of Lifetime Achievement awards.
Manila Bulletin Entertainment Editor Crispina Martinez Belen shared the Best Entertainment Columnist award with Dolly Ann Carvajal of the Inquirer and Ricky Lo of the Philippine Star.
The Gawad Tanglaw (Gawad Tagapuring mga Akademista ng Aninong Gumagalaw) began nine years ago as an award-giving body for film, television, radio, creative writing, dance and theater, but has since expanded its scope to include the print media as well.
It is composed of professors with masteral and doctor degrees from various schools in Metro Manila.
