Businessman accuses S’pore police of torture

A businessman charged with receiving S$1.4 million worth of stolen Apple products has accused Singapore police of physically torturing him for four hours.

During a court session on Monday, Ong Su Ping, 33, claimed soiled underwear was placed on his head and his private parts were assaulted.

According to his account, he was also forced to drink urine and had a toilet brush placed in his mouth.

A police spokesperson told Today that it takes "a serious view" of all complaints made by accused persons against SPF officers.

The Internal Affairs Office, which conducts independent investigations into complaints involving SPF's officers, is looking into Ong's allegations.

If his allegations prove to be true, the errant officer will face criminal charges.

But if the allegations are found to be false, the person found guilty of spreading the lies will be punished with a maximum jail term of one year, or with a fine of up to S$5,000, or both.

"As the case involving the accused (Ong) is currently before the Courts, it is inappropriate to comment further at this juncture," the police spokesperson said.

Ong and freelance courier Lee Peng Chou were arrested by airport police on 2 October.

The two men had received 1,930 Apple iPads and 1,464 iPhones which were stolen from the Dnata cargo terminal in Changi Airfreight Centre.

It is believed that more than 2,000 pieces of the stolen devices have already been shipped out of the country.

They each face one count of dishonestly receiving stolen property, and another count of assisting in the disposal of the stolen items.
