Mitsubishi gives its bestselling vehicle a mild refresh for 2020 that includes new tech features and slight updates both inside and out. Without breaking the PHP2 million barrier in both of its available trims, Mitsubishi’s sporty seven-seater is easily one of the most affordable SUV options available, pound-for-pound. Check out what’s new in the pickup-platform vehicle (PPV) with this 2020 Mitsubishi Montero Sport Buyer’s Guide.
Just like its predecessor, the 2020 Montero Sport remains powered by a 4N15 2.4-liter inline-four 16-valve Clean Diesel engine with Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) and Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) that puts out 179 hp and 430 Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a first-in-class 8-speed automatic transmission with Sports Mode that lets drivers use paddle shifters as a manual override.
Dimensions-wise, the Montero Sport remains unchanged, with overall measurements of 4785mm in length, 1815mm in width, and 1805mm in height. Minimum ground clearance is a tall 218mm, and coupled with a 700mm wading depth, makes traversing over floodwaters a breeze.
Mitsubishi evolves the Montero Sport’s ‘Dynamic Shield’ design theme to mirror that of the Strada, making it more obvious that both cars are built using the same platform. The triple-slat grille now has a more pronounced middle section that seamlessly blending with the daytime running lights, while the front bumper is now dimpled with the fog and signal light assembly.
The rear section also receives some changes as well—the teardrop taillights are now shorter, and the position of the signal and brake lights have been swapped. New 18-inch alloy wheels complete the Montero Sport’s list of updated exterior features.
Buyers of the Mitsubishi 2020 Montero Sport have five colors to choose from: White Diamond, Jet Black Mica, Graphite Gray Metallic, Medium Red, and Sterling Silver Metallic.
The new Montero Sport’s cabin welcomes a new 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system called ‘Smart Audio Display’ complete with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth and USB connectivity while also allowing for use as AM/FM radio and navigation system. Interior comfort is enhanced by the addition of 8-way power-adjustable seats and updated HVAC controls.
Meanwhile, a dual-zone automatic climate control system hands-free access tailgate, and an electrical outlet plus two USB charging ports for rear passengers make for a more convenient version of Mitsubishi’s flagship SUV. A full leather interior, six-spearker audio system, and steering wheel-mounted buttons for audio and cruise control round out the cabin’s plush furnishings.
Standard safety features come plenty for the 2020 Montero Sport, which include: airbags (six for the GT and two for the GLS), anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) and brake assist (BA), brake override system, hill-start assist, hill-descent control, active stability and traction control, trailer stability assist. Meanwhile, ISOFIX tether anchors and side impact beams help make the cabin safer for occupants of any age in case of collision.
With the updates and enhancements, the new Mitsubishi Montero Sport is designed to elevate one’s journey to new heights. Now more advanced and comfortable than ever, the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero Sport is available in two trims and priced as follows:
- Mitsubishi Montero Sport GLS 2WD AT – PHP1.769 million
- Mitsubishi Montero Sport GT 2WD AT – PHP1.998 million
A six-speed manual version, as well as the 4×4 model, will arrive at a later date.
