Members of the Commission on Appointments (COA) will hold a caucus or executive session tomorrow, Tuesday to discuss Secretary Gina Lopez’s appointment as the secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
It can be noted that last week, the Commission on Appointments postponed giving its decision on the Secretary’s appointment although the committee has already finished hearing Secretary Lopez’s oppositors.
The issue on the confirmation of the Secretary’s appointment has been intense due to the opposition of various pro-mining groups after Secretary Lopez ordered the closure and suspension of more than 20 mining operations in the country last February because of their alleged violations on environmental laws.
However, according to President Rodrigo Duterte, he remains supportive of Secretary Lopez.
The President made the statement during the inauguration of the government television station’s Cordillera hub in Baguio City on Saturday.
“The problem is that I saw the bald land area, and until now there’s been an open pit. and you know in such case, I have to support Lopez and I cannot help you,” he said.
The Chief Executive added that he would rather lose the P70 billion government revenue from mining than having total destruction of nature.
“Let me just add that all you contribute to the country is about P70 billion in taxes. We can live without it. I would rather follow Gina not to…minus the P70 billion. We will just source income in other ways to get the 70 billion somewhere else and preserve our environment” said President Duterte. — UNTV News and Rescue
