MANILA – The Commission on Appointments (CA) did not approve the appointment of Gina Lopez as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) secretary.
“The Commission has voted today and has met the required 13 votes. With sadness in my heart this committee is deliberating its deliberation on Gina Lopez appointment not the way I personally wanted to but the decision of the majority which, I am sorry, but we must all respect,” CA Environment Committee Chairman Manny Pacquiao said.
Senator Pacquiao refused to give details on the votes made by the senators, in accordance with the rules of an executive session.
Congressman Ronnie Zamora admits being one of those who voted against the appointment of Gina Lopez.
“I don’t think she is prepared for the job,” Cong. Zamora said.
Lopez is disappointed as she will not be able to pursue her plans for the DENR.
Despite this, she urges lawmakers who voted against her to publicly explain to the public.
“This was not my dream, it was the dream and the promise we have for the country and it is unfortunate that business interests have in fact run the day. We have many plans. By caring for nature, everyone will benefit,” Lopez said.
Several supporters of Lopez were dismayed saying the Commission on Appointments’ decision proves that the interest of mining companies wins.
“We are so very disappointed, hindi sa gobyerno kundi sa mga taong kayang bayaran kayang diktahan ng pera ng mga mayayaman (We are so very disappointed not with the government but with those people who can be paid, can be dictated by the money of the rich),” Datu Mansa Samuel Dawug Sumanda said.
The Chamber of Mines, meanwhile, thanked the Commission on Appointments for the speedy resolution of Lopez nomination saying this is just the beginning of a new chapter for the mining industry.
