Two of the top attractions in local basketball today will be the recipients of major awards from the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) when it honors the best of 2012 in elaborate rites on March 16 at the grand ballroom of the Manila Hotel.
Popular Mark Caguioa of Barangay Ginebra and National University star Bobby Ray Parks are going to be honored as the top professional and amateur basketball players during the PSA -Milo Annual Awards Night for distinguishing themselves as the top individual performers in both the PBA and UAAP.
Caguioa won his first Most Valuable Player (MV) award in Asia's first play-for-pay league, while Parks, son of former legendary PBA import Bobby, was MVP winner for the second straight time in the country's leading collegiate league.
The two had been feted with the same award in the past by the country's oldest media organization during the yearly program presented by Rain or Shine, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Basketball Association, LBC, ICTSI at Philippine Golf Tour, Harbour Centre, Senator Chiz Escudero, and Smart.
Caguioa was major awardee in pro ball in 2007, while Parks shared the honor with now PBA rookie Calvin Abueva as the best in amateur just a year ago.
Together, they join super horse Hagdang Bato and champion jockey Jonathan Hernandez among the major awardees in the PSA honor roll.
On top of the list as co-winners of the coveted Athlete of the Year award are boxing champions Nonito Donaire Jr. and Josie Gabuco, reigning World Series title holder Manila women's softball team, and five-time UAAP men's basketball titlist Ateneo Blue Eagles.
