  • Norrie battles well but Russian opponent proves too strong

  • Briton still waiting to make it to second week of a grand slam

Cameron Norrie’s wait for a place in the second week of a major goes on, after he was ousted from the French Open in four sets by the mighty Russian Karen Khachanov.

The statistic is a blot on Norrie’s otherwise admirable record, which now includes four ATP titles and a couple of weeks in the world’s top ten. He just keeps bumping up against his own personal glass ceiling.

At least Norrie is reaching the last 32 of the slams with some regularity now. Five times in his past eight attempts, to be precise. But getting over that extra hurdle into the fourth round – the sign of a top-class performer – is proving to be beyond him.

Khachanov is a ferocious striker of the ball who can take the racket out of your hands, and there were times on Friday when he was virtually unplayable. But Norrie will look at the statistics and kick himself when he sees the break-point column: 21 opportunities and only five of them taken.

"I think Karen was better than me," said Norrie. "He played the bigger points better. I wanted to try and make the second week for the first time. Today I didn't play my best. I'm looking forward to the grass court season. I really like the grass and the vibe around it, being at home. It's going to be interesting with Wimbledon this year but I'm looking forward to getting back to London and resting a little bit before Queen's."

Last year, Norrie’s luck was clearly out when it came to his third-round opponents. He met Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open, Nadal again here at Roland Garros and then Roger Federer on Centre Court at Wimbledon, which might as well be the great man’s front room.

This time, he was comfortably the higher seed – at No 10 as opposed to No 21 for Khachanov – and must have fancied his chances of finally breaking the jinx.

But Khachanov is slumming it a little at No 25 in the world. Three years ago, he rose as high as No 8, using his 125mph serve and clubbing forehand to beat Novak Djokovic in the final of the 2018 Paris Masters. On this evidence, he will soon be making his way back up the ladder.

Raucous chanting in Russian broke out around Court Simonne Mathieu as Khachanov approached the finish line. The match didn’t finish until after 11pm, and the cold weather made conditions horrible slow and heavy. But this favoured the 6ft 6in Khachanov, who was able to hit through the court when Norrie was reduced to playing for position.

If Norrie cannot seem to reach the fourth round, then Khachanov is a professional on this front – particularly at Roland Garros, where he has now made the second week five times in six attempts. He will go on to play boy wonder Carlos Alcaraz in the next round.

Norrie loses in four sets - as it happened

09:06 PM

Khachanov wins it 6-2, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4

He's been brilliant and is the deserved winner - winning it with an ace.

Norrie, to give him a lot of credit, played and fought well, he was, however, just beaten on the day by the better player.

09:02 PM

Norrie* 2-6, 5-7, 7-5, 4-5 Khachanov (*denotes server)

As you'd expect, Norrie keeps the match going. Holding to 30.

Khachanov has another chance to serve out the match...

08:59 PM

Norrie 2-6, 5-7, 7-5, 3-5 Khachanov* (*denotes server)

Norrie isn't giving up - he earns a break point with a fantastic drop volley. Can he prolong this match?

Yes ha can! Yet more Norrie battling sees him save three match point thanks to some ridiculous tennis.

Simply brilliant.

08:48 PM

Norrie* 2-6, 5-7, 7-5, 2-5 Khachanov (*denotes server)

Good service game for Norrie as he holds to 15 to stretch out this match a little longer.

08:46 PM

Norrie 2-6, 5-7, 7-5, 1-5 Khachanov* (*denotes server)

Khachanov is a man possessed at the moment - he sees the finish line in sight and he holds thanks to a perfect lob with Norrie at the net having dominated the rally.

This set the Russian has made nine winners and just one unforced error - he's been brilliant.

08:40 PM

Norrie* 2-6, 5-7, 7-5, 1-4 Khachanov (*denotes server)

At 40-30 the net chord shows its colours for the Russian. That makes it deuce and a moment later Khachanov has a break point.

And the Russian moves 4-1 thanks to a superlative point that sees Norrie come into the net but his backhand volley only sets up a fine forehand winner crosscourt for the double break. It's hard to see Norrie win from here.

08:38 PM

Norrie 2-6, 5-7, 7-5, 1-3 Khachanov* (*denotes server)

Khachanov holds well to love.

08:33 PM

Norrie* 2-6, 5-7, 7-5, 1-2 Khachanov (*denotes server)

Khachanov has a great opportunity to break again at 0-30 and with Norrie missing another first serve, his third in a row. But it's one he cannot take as Norrie fights back to 30-30.

Yet another brilliant forehand winner down the line earns the Russian a break point - one saved by Norrie thanks to a forehand winner of his own. From there Norrie battles to hold.

Impressive stuff from both men there.

08:28 PM

Norrie 2-6, 5-7, 7-5, 0-2 Khachanov* (*denotes server)

The Russian is impressive - he holds to love as the match enters its fourth hour.

08:25 PM

Norrie* 2-6, 5-7, 7-5, 0-1 Khachanov (*denotes server)

Norrie is relentless he's rarely out of a rally and battles to get to 40-30. But Khachanov has a lot of fight himself and gets it to deuce, then another fine forehand winner down the winner earns him a break point. A Norrie backhand into the net then gives the Russian the break.

08:18 PM

Norrie 2-6, 5-7, 7-5 Khachanov* (*denotes server)

Norrie has a glimpse of a fourth set with the score at 15-30. That then becomes 15-40 and the Briton has two set points.

And he wins it!

He breaks to 15 and we're going into a fourth set! He was a break down twice in that set and battled back impressively to take the set.

08:13 PM

Norrie* 2-6, 5-7, 6-5 Khachanov (*denotes server)

Norrie is serving well and opening his shoulders. On the way to holding to love he plays a couple of delightful points.

Khachanov now serving to stay in the third set.

08:12 PM

Norrie 2-6, 5-7, 5-5 Khachanov* (*denotes server)

Impressive hold from Khachanov - holding to love, that game goes in a blink of an eye.

08:09 PM

Norrie* 2-6, 5-7, 5-4 Khachanov (*denotes server)

Norrie is down 15-30 and gives himself a talking to. It seems to do the trick getting it to 40-30 with some fantastic net play.

Khachanov then counter punches brilliantly with a forehand winner down the line hit with supreme power.

There are two deuces before Norrie misses a volley at the net and the Russian is handed a break point. Norrie saves that by sending Khachanov wide and then playing a forehand winner down the line with a lot of spin. But next up a long forehand delivers the Russian another break point.

Norrie, however, show guts to save that point and then take the game - that's three in a row for the Briton.

08:01 PM

Norrie 2-6, 5-7, 4-4 Khachanov* (*denotes server)

Classic Cam Norrie - from 30-0 down he gets it back to 30-30 - thanks to his battling nature and a brilliant early backhand. A double fault from the Russian then gifts Norrie a break point - can he make this one count? Yes, he can.

Such a big game - he won four points in a row and it's back with serve in the third. Can he use this to get back on a roll?

07:55 PM

Norrie* 2-6, 5-7, 3-4 Khachanov (*denotes server)

Norrie is at 40-0 but a good winner from the Russian and error from the Briton gets Khachanov a glimmer of hope at 40-30. A wayward Norrie backhand then gets it to deuce. Squeaky bum time for the Briton...

A great first serve earns Norrie the advantage but a long forehand then moves the score back to deuce - once again Norrie is battling to hold.

But hold he does, winning the game with a smash on the run. That was an important hold of serve from the Briton.

07:50 PM

Norrie 2-6, 5-7, 2-4 Khachanov* (*denotes server)

Norrie is a battler and is proving a tough opponent for Khachanov. He gets it back to 30-30 but the Russian then holds to 30 and he's inching closer to that fourth round.

07:44 PM

Norrie* 2-6, 5-7, 2-3 Khachanov (*denotes server)

It's raining breaks at the moment - having worked so hard to break back Norrie undoes the good work and the Russian is two sets and a break up once again.

07:40 PM

Norrie 2-6, 5-7, 2-2 Khachanov* (*denotes server)

The Russian has played the big points better than Norrie an he looks in control at the moment - he's been the better player and is playing as well as he has in ages.

Norrie, however, still believes he can win this and from 40-15 down he gets it to deuce thanks to some powerful groundstrokes. He's raising his game and responding to the crowd, regardless of the final score he's showing great attitude. He earns break point and can break back immediately - he's only won one of 16 so far, can he make this one count? Yes, he can!

It's back with serve.

07:31 PM

Norrie* 2-6, 5-7, 1-2 Khachanov (*denotes server)

How did Khachanov return a fine deep forehand from Norrie? The sliced winner defied logic and physics - it's the shot of the match it it earns him a break early in this third set.

07:27 PM

Norrie 2-6, 5-7, 1-1 Khachanov* (*denotes server)

Norrie is moving well and a cute drop shot gets him to 15-15. At 40-15 Khachanov comes into the net but a blistering Norrie backhand forces the error to make the score 40-30. That soon becomes deuce and great anticipation from the Briton - reading the drop shot - sets up a fine winner that flat footed Khachanov.

Norrie cannot capitalise on the break point and he screams in anguish - assume that's to gee himself up. Whatever the reason it seems to do the trick as a backhand winner earns him another break point. It's deja vu, however, as after a 36-shot rally (the longest of the match) Khachanov saves the break point.

From there the Russian makes no mistake and it's another missed opportunity for Norrie.

07:16 PM

Norrie* 2-6, 5-7, 1-0 Khachanov (*denotes server)

Khachanov has been brilliant with the drop shot today - he again uses it twice in succession to go from 40-15 to deuce.

Norrie needed to win that game, you suspect, and that's what the Briton does when at deuce he could have folded.

07:09 PM

Norrie 2-6, 5-7 Khachanov* (*denotes server)

Khachanov ace, 15-15. Followed by a double fault, 15-30. That was an edgy second serve.

We definitely have a contest on now. A nervy double fault makes it 30-30. And Khachanov puts a defensive forehand into the net, break point Norrie. Big time tennis by Khachanov to save.

06:53 PM

Norrie* 2-6, 5-4 Khachanov (*denotes server)

From the high of breaking for the first time, Khachanov earns another break point on the Norrie serve. but the British No 1 responds with an ace.

Norrie makes another error to hand Khachanov a second break chance. Super volleying at the net from Norrie against some big shots but he stays composed to finish with a backhand volley winner.

And he gets ahead in the set when Khachanov puts a forehand wide. Game on!

06:47 PM

Norrie 2-6, 4-4 Khachanov* (*denotes server)

Khachanov's backhand has been huge today and he rifles a backhand down the line for a winner, 30-0.

But he then hits a double fault and misses with a backhand. An opening for Norrie potentially.

Khachanov backhand long, break point Norrie. Worst game of the match for Khachanov and he's finally punished as Norrie goes on the attack and hits a backhand volley winner to break.

06:42 PM

Norrie* 2-6, 3-4 Khachanov (*denotes server)

The drop shot has been really effective for Khachanov today and he draws another error from Norrie, 40-15. Norrie with another routine error, 40-30. He hasn't been his usual steady self.

Norrie forehand down the line is out, deuce. Norrie had to work hard for it but he does hang on to keep himself in touching distance.

06:35 PM

Norrie 2-6, 2-4 Khachanov* (*denotes server)

Norrie injects some pace into his play with a huge cross court forehand winner, 30-15. Great attacking tennis by Khachanov and he finishes with a quality backhand volley winner, 40-15.

A slower second serve catches out Norrie and Khachanov holds.

06:31 PM

Norrie* 2-6, 2-3 Khachanov (*denotes server)

Another tricky service game for Norrie and he finds himself down a break point again.

And the Russian moves ahead again but Norrie puts a tame forehand winner. Big problems now for the Briton.

06:26 PM

Norrie 2-6, 2-2 Khachanov* (*denotes server)

Khachanov has long been touted as a very promising player and we are seeing that in abundance tonight.

He's going to be very hard for Norrie to overcome.

Cameron Norrie bidding for fourth round at Roland Garros

Hello and welcome to coverage of Cameron Norrie's French Open third round clash against Karen Khachanov.

Norrie is the last Briton standing in the singles draw after coming through his opening two matches of the tournament in Paris. The British No 1 is in a rich vein of form after winning the Lyon Open prior to playing at Roland Garros.

On Wednesday, he beat Australian qualifier Jason Kubler in straight sets and today faces Khachanov, the 21st seed, as he bids to reach the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time.

"I'm really happy to be through," said Norrie. "It played out similar to what I thought it would be; pretty physical rallies, not really a clear strategy.

"I felt like my game matched up well with his. I played my patterns and managed to get the first set. It was a very close first set.

"I was a little bit disappointed with how I lost a bit of concentration early in the second. Up a break and a chance to put my foot on his neck. He fought back well, and I played a couple loose points.

"Then also in the third set, to lose concentration again. But I was really happy with how I finished the match playing.

"Winning six games in a row, and finding lots of width on my forehand and really spreading the court and hitting it very close to the line which made it very difficult for him."

Khachanov is from Russia but is playing under a neutral flag after the ATP allowed Russian and Belarusian players to continue playing.

Meanwhile, Andy Murray has insisted Wimbledon "will never be an exhibition" amid the ongoing row over its lack of ranking points. The WTA and ATP will not offer any points for the All England Club tournament after Wimbledon chiefs made the decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players from competing due to the war in Ukraine.

Former world No 1 Naomi Osaka hinted on Monday she may skip the third grand slam of the season because the absence of ranking points means "it's more like an exhibition", a phrase echoed by Norrie.
