Canadians can nominate their picks for the next UNESCO World Heritage site

Canadians are being invited by their government to nominate national monuments, landmarks or places of significance to submit for consideration as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Parks Canada has issued an open call to Canadians, asking for suggestions for the places to put forth on the next nomination list.

Sites inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list are deemed to be of outstanding universal value for reasons that range from representing a masterpiece of human creative genius, bearing a unique or exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or civilization, or containing superlative natural phenomena or exceptional natural beauty.

In all, sites must meet at least one of 10 selection requirements.

Applications must include a description of how the nominated property meets these requirements.

Canada currently has 18 properties inscribed as World Heritage sites.

Submissions will be reviewed by Parks Canada. Applications are due by January 27, 2017.
