KOTA BARU: The decision by the government to cancel the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project not only will upset the state Pas-led government but also the people of Kelantan.

State Pas Youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said the state government had been hoping that the project would bring various benefits to Kelantan and therefore it should be continued. “If it is cancelled, not only the state government would he unhappy but also local people.

“They (the local people) have been dreaming of benefits from the project including economy activities which will be carried out along the rail,”he said when contacted by NSTP today.

Ahmad Fadhli, who is also Pasir Mas MP, said the ECRL project while focusing on passenger transport would also help boost economy growth in the state.

He hoped the federal government especially Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would reconsider the decision.

It was reported today that the government decided to cancel the multi-billion ECRL and Trans-Sabah Gas Pipeline (TSGP) projects for now.

Dr Mahathir said he had conveyed the decision to the Chinese government and they understood the problems faced by Malaysia.

Speaking at a Press Conference at the end of his five-day visit to China, Dr Mahathir said he believed China does not want Malaysia to become a bankrupt state. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
