Car crashes into gate of Merkel's office

A car with slogans scrawled on its sides crashed into the gate of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's office in Berlin on Wednesday (November 25).

There were no immediate reports of casualties and it's not clear if Merkel was inside the building.

The driver, who appeared to be in late middle age, was taken away in a wheelchair.

Police say they do not suspect that it was an extremist attack, though Europe is on high alert after recent Islamist attacks in Paris, Nice and Vienna.

"Stop Globalization Politics" was written in white on one side of the car, and "You damn killers of children and old people", on the other.

Both the fence and the car seemed largely undamaged. The chancellery is set well back from the road.
