One dead after car plunges into River Dart at Dartmouth

One person has died after a car plunged into the River Dart, police have said.

The vehicle was reported to have gone into the water opposite the Dartmouth Lifeboat Centre at around 8.40am on Sunday, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

Emergency services, including police divers, attended the scene.

A man in his 80s, said to be the sole occupant of the car, was extracted from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

His death is not believed to be suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

After being closed and cordoned off, the embankment was reopened on Sunday evening.
