Caroline Wozniacki beats Venus Williams to take WTA Finals title in Singapore

Caroline Wozniacki was crowned the champion of the year end WTA Finals at the Singapore Indoor Stadium after she defeated Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday (29 Oct).

The Dane took about 90 minutes to defeat the American for the year-end title.

It is Wozniacki’s second title of the year, and the biggest one of her career after claiming the Pan Pacific Open trophy earlier this year in Tokyo.

Williams had won all seven of their previous meetings.

“Well eight is my lucky number and I figured if I was ever going to beat her it would be today… and I just went out there and did my best,” said Wozniacki speaking courtside after the match.

She will rise to number three in the world rankings this week following her win at the year-end tournament, which features the top eight in women’s tennis who play on the professional tour circuit. Speaking at a post-match press conference, Wozniacki said, “I’m very happy the season has finished and I’ll finish on a high… But for now I will not be touching a racquet for the next four weeks.”
