Next month sees the government's revised road tax bands come into place for new diesel vehicles, which could see some newly-registered vehicles costing up to £500 more annually in Vehicle Excise Duty (VED).
The new brackets are based on the Real Driving Emissions 2 (RDE2) standard tests, which caused much controversy from experts when announced last year. Manufacturers argued that the move was unfair, as no diesel car currently meets the standard, as the regulation doesn't become mandatory until 2020.
The new groupings will see cars emitting between 226 and 255g/km of CO2 paying an additional £500 in road tax in the first year, while those emitting between 191g/km and 225g/km will pay £400 more in the first year.
However, it's worth noting that these inflated measures only affect vehicles in the first year, with charges reducing back to the flat level in their second year and onwards.
It's largely large diesel 4X4s that will be hit the hardest, including the Audi SQ7, Bentley Bentayga 4.0-litre and Range Rover 4.4-litre SDV8 being the hardest hit by these increased road tax increases.
Other highly polluting diesels that you'll have to pay more for from next month include the Toyota Land Cruiser, SsangYong Rexton and BMW X6.
It's worth noting that any diesel vehicle polluting over 50g/km will be hit with increased tax rates, though, varying from £15 on lower polluting vehicles to £500 on the highest.
