Cassowary Makes Light Work of Watermelon Treat Ahead of World Cassowary Day

Staff at Denver Zoo treated one of their cassowaries to a watermelon treat ahead of World Cassowary Day this Saturday, September 26.

Video released by the zoo shows cassowary Princess Salem devouring the watermelon in her enclosure at the zoo.

Denver Zoo said that although the flightless bird, native to New Guinea, northern Australia and parts of Indonesia, often has a bad reputation, they have an important role in their habitat.

“These fearsome beauties spread the seeds of the rainforest fruit they so love, and while protecting their own territories, protect the home of many endangered animals,” Denver Zoo said. Credit: Denver Zoo via Storyful
