The cast of the American sitcom Friends will each earn nearly £2 million when they appear in a one-off reunion show, it has emerged.

The six original cast members who played a group of friends living in Manhattan have signed a new deal to appear in a single episode to be shown 16 years after the show ended.

It is understood Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer will each receive between $2.25 and $2.5 million.

The sitcom, set in New York and featuring the characters Ross, Rachel, Phoebe, Monica, Chandler and Joey, proved an international hit over the course of 10 years and 10 seasons.

A total of 236 episodes were made with the final 2004 show attracting an audience of 52 million viewers in America alone.

However, the series has experienced a surge in popularity recently among younger viewers who have discovered it through Netflix.

Five of the cast posted an original promotional picture on their Twitter accounts saying: “It’s happening!”

As if in character, Le Blanc, who plays Joey, instead posted a picture of the cast of the earlier US sitcom M*A*S*H, with with the same caption: “It's happening!”

Ms Aniston commented on his error: “Oh no... No no no NO LeBlanc! Could that BE more NOT what we said to post???”
