Casual, plaited or with a fringe: hairstyles from the Spring/Summer 2016 catwalks

The Spring/Summer 2016 ready-to-wear shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris had a lot to teach us about the season's hottest hair trends.

The overwhelming trend across the board was for was for natural-looking hair worn casually in loose waves for a soft, imperfect look. In New York the approach was epitomized by Carolina Herrera, where the models wore their locks loose and heavy, and at Rachel Zoe, who, inspired by the jet-setting ways of the fun-loving "Gypset", sent her models out sporting bohemian waves. Diane von Furstenberg roughed up the finish and pinned the hair back on one side for a more tousled look and in Paris Chloé and John Galliano opted for a light and wispy effect that emanated nonchalence. Emporio Armani and Trussardi carried the torch in Milan, opting for a center part for a grown-up vibe.

Braids were another key feature of the season, cropping up at Louis Vuitton in Paris, where miniature plaits were weaved into the hair, giving models a doll-like look, and at Manish Arora, where hair extensions were pinned into the hair accessories to create fairy-tale braids that hung down over the face. Also in Paris, Valentino courted controversy by sending models out on to the runway sporting cornrows, and Céline pulled hair back into a slick ponytail, before braiding it down the back. At Hervé Léger in New York, thick braids were swept from the parting to the nape of the neck for a feminine and fashion-forward look.

Finally, bangs had a moment. The fringe had something of a youthful and quirky makeover, worn super short and uneven. Christopher Kane kept the hair cropped high up on the forehead, in what was more of a micro fringe, while Marques' Almeida also championed the style, favoring a choppy line for a fun, self-styled aesthetic. In Paris, Lanvin opted for a boyish style that saw the hair twisted back off the face, capped off by a jagged fringe that swept the forehead.
