Casualty star Nigel Harman is leaving his role on the soap after less than a year. The actor, who joined Casualty as Max Cristie in February, was confirmed last month to be competing on the upcoming 21st series of Strictly Come Dancing.

Digital Spy can confirm that the actor has finished working on Casualty and that his final scenes will air early next year.

It is not yet clear how Max might leave the soap, although he is currently involved in plenty of drama with Donna Jackson, with whom he has shared some secret passion.

Over the past few months, Max has also had his work cut out trying to improve the Emergency Department amid budget cuts, while his estranged daughter, Jodie Whyte, has also arrived at the hospital as a new nurse.

Harman, who also starred in EastEnders as Dennis Rickman between 2003 and 2005 before his character was killed off, said that he was "amazed, excited, and terrified to be doing Strictly" after the news of his casting was revealed.

"As an armchair fan of the show I have watched in awe as people have twirled and gyrated across the screen," he added. "And now it's my turn...gulp!"
