GEORGE TOWN: Police are hot on the heels of a motorcyclist who sped off after ramming into a pedestrian here today.

The 1.20pm incident happened while the woman was crossing the busy Jalan Burma.

A 12-second video footage released by police this evening showed the woman walking along the zebra crossing.

Three seconds later, the motorcyclist slammed into her, dropping a motorcycle helmet in the process.

The woman fell to the ground and a loud scream was subsequently heard.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said the woman was immediately rushed to the Penang Hospital for treatment.

"The victim is unconscious.

"She also broke her leg and sustained serious head injuries," he said.

Mior said police have identified the motorcycle registration number.

The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

No arrests have been made so far.
