Chanel is the latest fashion house to join the fight against the novel coronavirus. The luxury brand will begin producing protective masks and gowns, as soon as prototypes are approved by the French authorities.

“Today we are mobilizing our workforce and our partners ... to produce protective masks and blouses,” the company said in a statement.

To date, there have been more than 40,000 cases of the novel coronavirus in France according to the New York Times, and on Saturday, Health Minister Olivier Veran said that the country is using 40 million face masks per week.

In addition to the production of masks, Chanel has pledged to donate €1.2 million to "an emergency fund for the public hospital system in Paris and French emergency services, financing work on the front lines of the fight against the COVID-19," reports WWD.

The company is also donating 50,000 masks to policemen and women, firefighters, and for public officials to use while in hospitals.

Chanel is just one of many large businesses using their manufacturing facilities to aid in the fight against COVID-19. Notably, LVMH, Estée Lauder, and Coty are producing hand sanitizer.

Additionally, Burberry is “retooling” its Yorkshire trench coat factory to be able to make nonsurgical gowns and masks. The British heritage brand is also donating to charities focused on decreasing hunger. “With pressures mounting on food supplies, the charities are further expanding efforts to help those struggling as a result of the outbreak. This includes setting up community produce hubs, delivering food to young people who rely on free school meals and increasing pre-packed food parcels to help food banks cope with demand and maintain social distancing policies,” the brand told WWD.
