Charmaine Sheh denies supporting extradition protests

18 Jun – Hong Kong actress Charmaine Sheh has denied expressing any political views regarding the protest against the extradition bill that had been going on in Hong Kong's financial district.

As reported on Mingpao, the issue sparked recently, when some mainland netizens noticed that the actress liked a photo from the protest on Instagram, which was tagged "NoChinaExtradition".

Following threats of boycotts from mainland fans, the actress recently took to Weibo to explain herself, saying, "I went back from work late that night and habitually browsed through my friends' photos on Instagram. I browsed the work of a known photographer and liked his photos."

Charmaine said that she only realised the actual content of the photo soon after, and immediately removed her Likes.

"I, Charmaine Sheh, am patriotic and love Hong Kong! I don't want to be over-interpreted by others. Thank you all," she added.

Thousands of civilians and activists recently went to the street to protest a proposed amendment to the city's extradition processes that will enable authorities in mainland China, Taiwan and Macau to request extradition of suspects accused of criminal wrongdoings.

While some believes that such a step will ensure Hong Kong would not be a safe haven for criminals, many stated that it would only expose the people of Hong Kong to China's deeply flawed justice system and undermine the city's judicial independence.
