Check out the special coins MAS has released for SG50

New coins to commemorate Singapore's 50th anniversary.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore has released a new line of coins to commemorate the country's 50th anniversary of independence.

Coming in $2, $5 and $50 denominations, the series is titled "Education, Building a Nation Together” and  reflects the “fundamental role” education has played in Singapore’s nation building, according to a press release by MAS.

The $2 cupro-nickel coin features basic education at the primary and secondary levels, while the $5 silver coin showcases higher education and the $50 gold coin features Singapore's teachers. The obverse of the coins bears the Singapore Coat of Arms with the year 2015.

According to the MAS statement, Singapore’s multi-racial diversity is depicted in all three designs. 

Here's what the coins look like:


$2 coin 

The coin is minted with 20 grams of cupro-nickel alloy and has a diameter of 38.70 mm. It features colour application.
 
The foreground depicts students engaged in diverse learning activities, in both academic and non-academic domains. It underscores the importance of a holistic education in developing character, and enabling students to discover and build on their strengths and interests. The background features Bukit Panjang Government High School (BPGHS). Set up in 1960, BPGHS is an example of the schools that have journeyed with the nation, and continue to nurture our next generation.



$5 coin 

The coin is minted with 1 troy ounce of 999 fine silver and has a diameter of 40.70mm. It features colour application, and comes with a serialised certificate of authenticity.

The foreground depicts students in various fields of study – culinary arts at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), engineering at a polytechnic, and medicine at a university. The range of courses available at the various institutes of higher learning reflects the diverse strengths and interests of our students. The background features the ITE Headquarters and ITE College Central, and the National University of Singapore’s Bukit Timah Campus. The former is the latest ITE campus, opened in November 2013, while the latter symbolises the early years in the development of a high-quality tertiary education system.

 

$50 coin

The coin is minted with ¼ troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold and has a diameter of 21.96mm. It comes with a serialised certificate of authenticity.

The foreground depicts educators in a range of teaching activities, collectively representing the teaching fraternity. The background features a typical classroom scene in a primary school, reminding us of the role our educators play in guiding and inspiring every child through their words and deeds, and developing each to his or her fullest potential.
